Professionals Prize for Juniors – 17 August 2024
We hosted our second major of the year, Davie’s Professional Prize for the Juniors, today. We had 71 boys and girls playing (possibly a new record?) and there was a great evening in the clubhouse after for the prizegiving.
Our Mens Captain, and former Junior Convenor, Mark McAleer was on hand to introduce Davie and our Junior Boys Captain, Dylan Holmes, to call out the results and present the prizes. The overall winner was Ruadhán Murray with 38 points / 71 gross, beating Jane Lumley on countback. Well done Ruadhán on a great score. The gross prize was won by Will O’Riordan who topped off a great week having also won the Wicklow Boys on Tuesday!
Well done to all of our prize winners and our category winners – James Ward in Reds, Ava Melody in Whites and Sean Hughes in 7Ups.
A big thank you to Davie who gives so much time to our Juniors, and also to Ben and Keith. The year round coaching which they provide is evident to see in the progress all of the boys and girls are making. Thank you also Ali, Liz, Olivia and Holly for feeding everybody, and Paul, Áine and the team behind the bar.
Also thank you to all of our starters and card markers today – we can only run weekly competitions for the Juniors with the help of parents!
Best of luck this week to Karl, Pete, Michael and all of the Fred Daly panel – Dylan Holmes, Jamie Anderson, Will O’Riordan, Toby Murphy, Jack McGovern, Milo Doyle, Ruadhán Murray and Marc Lawless – who play Edenderry in the All-Ireland quarter final on Tuesday in Warrenpoint GC. The whole club is behind you guys!
And finally, best of luck to Shauna, Isabella, Toby and Ruadhán who play the final round of inter-provincial matches for the Leinster U18, U16 and U14 teams this week in Roscrea. Play well guys!

Leinster Men’s Senior Interclub lose to Naas
Our Men’s Leinster Senior Interclub team were playing there 3rd round against Naas Golf Club. Trevor Phillips was looking after things in Naas while Stephen O’Brien was in charge at home. The team selected were as follows:
Home:
- Neil Lawless and Paul Creedon
- Michael Whelan and Macdara Cummins
Away:
- Colm Drew and Conor Lucey
- Dermot Barry and Andy Nolan
Naas got off to a good start in the first game and we’re two up after 7 holes. They added another win on 9 to be 3 up against Neil and Paul.
In the second game Michael and Macdara were two down after 3 but won 4 of the next 5 holes. Naas pulled one back on 9 for Greystones to be one up at the turn.
Meanwhile away in Colm and Conor were up first and got away to a steady start and were all square after 4 holes. They won 2 and lost one of the next three and were one up after 9.
Dermot and Andy had a tough start and found themselves 2 down after 4 but steadied the ship and remained 2 down after 9.
At home Paul and Neil were looking to reel in their opposition and started well by winning the tenth. However wins by Naas on 13 and 16 meant Naas went one ahead after a 4&2 win
Macdara and Michael also won ten to go 2 up. Another win on 13 put them in control but two quick wins by Naas on 14 and 15 made things interesting again. A win on 17 closed the match out 2&1 and levelled the tie at one all.
All eyes now were on Naas as they had started half an hour later.
Andy and Dermot won the tenth to trim the deficit to one. Unfortunately that was as close as they got as Naas pressed home their advantage by winning 12, 15 and 16 to win 4&2. Naas now were 2-1 up.
Last match out were Colm and Conor. They extended their lead to 2 by winning the 11th. Naas had their backs against the wall and came out fighting and won the 13th, 15th and 16th to go one up. A half on 17 was all Naas needed to guarantee the half point they needed to progress to the next round.
Commiserations to Trevor and Stephen and the team and best of luck to Naas in the next round.

Thank you also to Paul, Jackie and the team behind the bar and also to Ali, Liz, Olivia and the team in the kitchen who fed and watered everybody.
We also had a busy week in the provincial championships. Will O’Riordan was just pipped at the finish line when he was beaten in a play-off for the Munster U18 Boys after shooting a great final round of 2 under par 69, playing his last 6 holes in 3 under par. This followed Will’s 3rd place finish in the Leinster U18 Boys a few weeks ago – great golf Will! Dylan Holmes was tied 22nd, while Jamie Anderson and Toby Murphy also played. And well done to Dylan, Jamie and Will who played for our Mens Senior Cup team today in a great win over Lucan in the Leinster South Area quarter-final.
Isabella Stewart shot a final round of 73 to finish tied 5th in the Munster U18 Girls and Shauna Seifried finished in 12th place after a final round of 79 (Sinead is following you Shauna after a great score today!). Well done ladies!
Up in Tyrone, Ruadhán Murray shot a 77 to finish in 8th place in the Ulster U14 Boys. Ruadhán will make his interprovincial debut in 2 weeks time for the Leinster U14s when they play Ulster. Well done Ruadhán!

The home team of Shauna Seifried, Mary Lockhart and Deirdre Ahern stole the show with three amazing wins against tough opposition. Niamh Keilthy and Marguerite Hamill fought hard in very tough windy conditions in Arklow.
Special thanks to all the caddies who helped keep nerves at bay and to the players and subs who gave up their time to practice and play. You’re a great bunch. Onwards and upwards now to the quarter final against Dun Laoghaire.
Intermediate Foursomes
The Intermediate Foursomes team took on Lucan on Sunday 9th in their quarter final round, managed by Orla Delaney Another wet & windy day in both venues but didn’t stop Greystones who had 3 wins against a very strong Lucan team.
