In the first semi final of this year’s Club Championship, Shane O’Connor & Ray Crotty teed it up this evening.
In what was a tightly contested match Shane eventually won out on the 17th, 3&1 and is the first to make it to the final this year.
Hard luck to Pat O’Dowd and his Best Cup team who lost 3 to 2 to Delgany this afternoon. With three at home and putting out a strong team Pat felt we had a great chance but alas it wasn’t to be we came up against a very strong Delgany team who played extremely well on the day.
In Delgany, Jimmy Hempenstall & Brian O’Connor lost on 16 and our second away pairing of John Carroll & Michael Gaughran fought bravely from 4 down to eventually loose on 17. Three wins at home were now required and with Dermot Whiston & John Gogavan getting us a point on 15 ( 4&3) and Maurice Phelan & Paul Cahill also winning by a margin of 3&2 it all came down to the George Hughes & Chris Corrigan match. A solid front 9 had George & Chis in touch with their opposition but unfortunately they lost their match and the tie on the 16th, 3&2.
Hard luck to Pat, Joe and all the team.

Leading the way is Keith Lewis on 220points followed by Julian Keown on 150 pts and Gary O’Connor on 135. With 6 more scoring competitions to come it’s all to play for.
Our third Junior match out today saw Neil Lawless’ Wicklow Cup team take on Blainroe in Greystones. This competition is a scotch foursomes format.
Neil’s team included two debutantes pulling on the yellow club shirt, Adam Moore and Kallum McCormack. Neil paired Adam and Kallum with two stalwarts in William O’Riordan and Jack McGovern respectively for their first team outing.
First out were Jamie Anderson & Mark Lawless who turned 1 up and finished out their match 3&2 after a very solid performance. At the other end of the team sheet, Brook Mangan & Milo Delaney were in total control, winning out by a hefty 9&7 margin against two Blainroe players making their debuts for their club. The third Match out featured Kevin Dillon & Tom Murray who sealed their match on the 15th hole, 4&3. Jack McGovern & Adam Moore had to wait till the 16th to win, 3&2 and give Adam his first club point. William O’Riordan & Kallum McCormack stuck at it till the 18th when Kallum held a putt for a halved match and an overall team result of 4 1/2 to 1/2 for Greystones.
Congratulations to all the team.
Our girls team, playing in the Golf Ireland Inter Club competition had a great win this afternoon against Powerscourt. All three matches were in Greystones. Aishling Marmion had a great, 7&6 victory and Isabella Stewart won 6&5. Our third player, 2020 Golfer of the year winner, Phoebe Fergusson was called in.
A great result – well done !
Hard luck to the Irish Junior Foursomes team who lost out to local rivals, Delgany this morning. The competition is handicapped and we were giving 7 shots at home and 3 away.
It looked to be very much going our way after the first eight holes with our home match of Dylan Holmes & Jamie Anderson in a commanding lead of 6 up and the away team of George O’Brien & Jack McGovern at3 up. As we all know however team match-play golf can turn in a flash and so it happened this morning.
All square after 15 our pair in Delgany lost 16, 17 & 18 to finish 3 down. To be fair they had absolutely no luck on the day.
All eyes turned to home where a win on 16 brought the match to 3 up for Greystones however we were giving a shot on 17. Delgany won this hole with a par which included an unbelievable Up & Down from the back of the green. Meanwhile in Dalgany, George & Jack were on the putting green in case of a play off depended on a win on 18 for Dylan & Jamie. On 18, Delgany were in trouble off the tee and hit a provisional while Greystones split the fairway. Delgany found their first ball and were able to hack it out to the fairway and their next shot was to 6 feet which Paddy McGovern duly held for the visitors to give them a win by 1 hole.
Hard luck to all involved.
A mixed bag in terms of both weather and results over the weekend of Captain Philip’s prize.
Thursday saw Liam O’Shea and his super, Super Seniors travel to Delgany for their second fixture in this event having secured a great home win earlier this month. It is so hard to win five away matches and this tie ended up as tight as could be. First out were Ray Hogan & Julian Pollard who played great golf and finished with pars on 16 and 17 to win the match. Cathal Cooney & Jerry Teehan never gave up and their match ended in a half. Our third pair of Pat O’Regan & Pat Raftery played great but unfortunately lost on the 16th. 1 1/2 each and it couldn’t have been tighter. It took two strong wins, one by Jim F. Ryan & Alan O’Sullivan on the 18th and the other by Eddie Joynt & Denis Cromie, also on the 18th, to seal this very exciting tie. Next up is a tie away to Woodenbridge.
On a very pleasant afternoon on Friday Tom Byrne’s Senior cup team took on Wicklow with three matches away. As most golfers will appreciate it is never easy to win any match in Wicklow, and the senior cup team were well aware of this having lost to Wicklow last year. Daniel O’Byrne got off to a slow start in Wicklow, never really recovered and eventually lost 5&4. Tom had Gary Dunne out on the third match in Wicklow. Gary has recently returned from the US and has been shooting some great sores but on the day his opponent kept clear air between them and eventually Gary lost out 4&3. Meanwhile at home, Adam Packman was storming ahead. Two up after two, he never looked like he was going to loose and eventually ran out a comfortable winner by a margin of 7&5. Our first match out at home saw Shane O’Connor 1 down through 6 holes, at which stage he hit the Pro button and won 4&3.
It all came down to our first man out in Wicklow, Niall Gaffney. Niall found himself 1 down through 11 and in a ding dong battle for the tie. At 1 down through 15 and on an away course, it didn’t look particularly good, however Niall played some excellent golf to win 16 & 17 to win the match and the tie.
Congratulations to all, next up is a home tie against Dun Laoghaire.
On Sunday Colm Mulcahy’s Junior Cup team took on Dun Laoghaire. On a horrendous day weather wise it was always going to be a struggle but Colm had a very strong team out and hopes were high. At home, our third match out, the normally unbeatable Alan Keane found himself 2 down through 5 holes. He fought back to all square through 7 but lost 8 to go one down. A bad run through 12, 13 and 14 saw the match go Dun Laoghaire’s way as they won out 4&3. In Dun laoghaire our second match out saw Jamie McDonald struggle from the get-go and unfortunately Jamie lost 5&4. With two matches in the bag Dun Laoghaire needed just one to win the tie. At home Diarmaid MacGabhann was in control of his match, albeit by small margins and was 2 up after 14 holes. Dylan Holmes, in the second match was fighting hard in an up and down match and was all square through 16. In Dun Laoghaire Harry Kirk came from two down after 6 to be all square standing on the 18th tee box. Needing all three matches, it was unfortunate for Harry and the team that he got stuck under the lip of a bunker on the 18th and ended up loosing the hole and the tie went Dun Laoghaire’s way.
Hard luck to all involved, a huge effort was put into this competition by Colm, Eddie and the players.
What a couple of days ! Bright sunshine ( and some very bright clothes ) helped, but Vice Captain Danny and Club Manager Liam really pulled out all the stops to produce one of our most memorable Captain’s Days for Captain Philip. The course was immaculately presented by course superintendent Keith Clancy and as usual Olivia, Liz and the team made sure none of us were hungry. Paul Lee and his team did their, at this stage normal, fantastic Captain’s night job albeit all outdoors. Many thanks to John O’Keeffe and Diago for their drinks sponsorship which was greatly appreciated by all ( no surprise there ). Davie Lewis and his team, in their first Captain’s Day at Greystones ensured that everything from a golfing perspective went off to perfection.
Of course, there can only be one winner and this year we had a very popular winner indeed. Local restaurateur Julian Keown shot one under gross off 5 to win with 42 points beating Gary O’Connor who had 41 points into second and Keith Lewis who also had 41 points into third place. It was a double win for Julian, who also won the Frazer Cup for the low round of the day. In an emotional winners’ speech Julian dedicated the win to his good friend Stephen Cahill, who sadly passed away last year.
Many congratulations to Captain Philip on a great club day – thanks Philip.
