Vice Captain Danny’s Prize winners
Congratulations to Larry & Niall Stokes who shot an incredible 49 points on Saturday to win Vice Captain Danny’s prize to the men. Malcolm Herron & Michael Bolton must have thought they were home and hosed after shooting 47 points but this great score only got them second place. In third place were another father & son combination, Pat & Derek O’Regan who had 46 points.
Under 15 team get the better of Bray
A great win for our Under 15 Boys this afternoon when they overcame Bray to set up another challenging encounter with Elm Park in the last 8 of the Leinster Under 15 competition.
Greystones had three matches away in Bray and two at home. Toby Murphy , our first match away got off to the worst possible start and was 5 down after 5. Toby was unfortunate to come up against the best 28 handicapper in the country, who got up and down from everywhere. These things happen and Toby has delivered for the team on more than one occasion already this year. Toby fought on bravely and eventually lost out by a margin of 4&3. By contrast William O’Riordan was 5 up through seven holes and never relented, closing his match out 6&5 after some spectacular golf. When his match finished William was 1 under par. Our third match away, Jamie Anderson started very well and was 3 up through 5 but was giving a lot of shots and found himself 1 down after the 11th.
At home Jack McGovern and Dylan Holmes took on Bray’s top two players. Jack was giving 8 shots and Dylan, playing a 0.7 handicapper was getting one shot.
Despite loosing the first hole, Jack strung together impressive wins on 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 & 10 to go five up. Meanwhile, Dylan Holmes picked up where he left off on Tuesday when he won the Wicklow boys and picked his way around the front nine to turn 4 up and an excellent up and down on the 10th extended his lead. Dylan was playing a quality opponent and it was nip and tuck from there on in with Dylan loosing 11 but winning 12. Another two fantastic up and downs from Dylan on 13 & 14 brought the match to dormie in the Greystones man’s favour.
Back in Bray, Jamie was fighting hard, winning both the 12th and 13th to take a slender, 1 shot lead. Jamie lost 14 and managed a half on 15 to get the match all square with four to play but was going to have to give three shots on those holes. This was a huge ask but he got to the eighteenth after a win on 16 and a loss on 17. The eighteenth in Bray is a tricky hole even without the extra pressure of giving your opponent a shot and Jamie had to hold his nerve to slot home a five footer to take the match to the 19th. Jamie’s experience came to bear on this hole and he closed out his match to win and take our points tally to two.
Back with Jack’s match, an unlikely birdie for his opposition ( a chip in from 30 yards ) on 11 had halted his charge briefly but halves on 12, 13 & 14 followed by a win on 15, for a round of 3 over to that point, closed the match for Jack and sealed the tie for the Greystones team.
Dylan was on the fairway behind Jack dormie 4 up when called in.
A great win for all the team.
Under 15s face Bray on Friday…
Our only match this weekend sees Peter Anderson and Karl Holmes lead the Under 15s as they play Bray in the last 16 of this Leinster competition. Once again we unfortunately have three away, but that’s the luck of the draw. Elm Park await the winner of this fixture.
Tee off in Bray is at 15.20 and our home matches begin at 16.00. If you can’t make it to either venue you can follow the live scoring using the Live Scoring webpage which can be found on the home page of this website or by clicking here.
Best of luck to all involved.
Dylan Holmes – A worthy winner of Wicklow Boys
What a great result for Dylan Holmes and Greystones Golf Club this afternoon as Dylan became the youngest player to lift the Wicklow Boys trophy after four scintillating rounds of golf.
The tournament, which was sponsored once again this year by Wood Group Homes is the last remaining 72 hole, Under 18 strokeplay event on the golfing calendar and has been running for over thirty five years. Previous notable participants include Padraig Harrington and previous winners include Tour Professionals Peter Laurie and Keith Nolan and of course Greystones’ own Paul Dunne, who won the event twice. This year saw a strong field of over 60 players, representing 23 different clubs with 31 players off a handicap of 4 or less and 7 players between 0 and +2 handicap.
Dylan opened on day 1 with two excellent rounds of 68 leaving him on 2 under and seven shots ahead of Charlie Quinn (Castle Golf Club) and Sam Gammell (Naas) who both sat on +5 after their opening two rounds. Gavin Rochford (Bray) was one further back on +6 with Portmarnock’s Brandon St. John one shot further away on +7.
Round 3 this morning had Dylan tee it up alongside Charlie Quinn and Sam Gammell with Gavin Rochford in the group ahead and Brandon St. John in the third last three-ball. Dylan started with 4 bogeys and after his first birdie of the day on the par 5 ninth turned at +3, another bogey followed on the 10th and birdies on the 13th & 15th followed by a bogey on the par 3 16th (the hole that played most difficult on the day) saw him sign off for a three over par score of 72. A quadruple bogey on the par 5 15th for Charlie Quinn saw his hopes of winning the title slip away but a solid round of 70 from Brandon St. John and an excellent 68 from Gavin Rochford brought them back into the frame going into the forth and final round.
After the opening four holes of the final round, Dylan’s four shot lead had disappeared. Dylan was three over for his round while Gavin Rochford was one under and tied with Dylan for the lead. Brandon St. John had started with a flourish and was three under through the four. Consecutive birdies for Dylan on holes six, seven and eight however restored a buffer of five shots over Gavin and six over Brandon heading into the back nine.
At this stage there was a lot of pressure on the young Greystones player with the crowds following his match beginning to grow. Dylan bogeyed the 10th and 11th before hitting a glorious shot to three feet on twelve and holing the putt for birdie. Gavin’s back nine started double, treble, double and this put paid to his championship hopes. Showing maturity beyond his fourteen years, Dylan parred his way in from the 14th after a bogey on the 13th and a birdie, birdie finish from Brandon St. John proved too late with Dylan running out the championship winner by five shots. A fantastic achievement following on from his fourth place finish in the Ulster Under 16 Boys championship last week.
Special thanks go to Tom Byrne who has been running this event so efficiently for the past twenty years and to his team of Niall Byrne, Darragh Browne and Alan Keane.
Holmes leads Wicklow Boys into Day 2
Greystones’ Dylan Holmes heads The Wicklow Boys tournament after rounds 1 & 2. A pair of 68’s has given Dylan a 7 shot lead at 2 under par with 36 holes to play tomorrow. On his heals are Charlie Quinn from Castle and Sam Gammell from Naas who are each on 5 over par.
This year saw an incredibly strong field with handicaps ranging from +2 upwards.
Round 3 tee off, for those who made the cut, will begin at approximately 7.15 tomorrow with the leaders heading out at around 8.30. Round 4 is expected to begin at around 13.00.
The Wicklow Boys is the only remaining 72 hole non provincial title in the country and is once again kindly sponsored by Wood Group Homes this year. Previous winners of the event include tour professionals, Peter Laurie, Keith Nolan and of course, our own Paul Dunne who won it twice.
Isabella wins in Blainroe …
A day of two halves for our teams…
First out this morning were our Pierce Purcell team in their quarter final against Elm Park. With three away matches, Mark Byrne and his team had their work cut out for them. At home Rob Tierney & Stefan Florin had a tight match and were up for most of it. Unfortunately 16 & 17 cost them and they lost on the 18th. Our second pair out at home were Mark A. Byrne & Jonathan Kirwan who again, had a tight match but eventually Elm Park ran out 2&1 winners. Away from home, our third pairing of Alan Byrne & Gerry Browner were up from the start but were called in on the 14th at 1 up as our first away pairing of Frank Marmion & Leo Dalton lost the decisive match 6&5. Frank & Leo had been in touch for the first 9 holes but a run of losses on the back nine cost them the match. Our second match in Elm Park, Conor Whelan & John Comer were also called in dormie 6 down.
Mark and his team had some excellent wins up till today. Hopefully they will be back again even stronger next year.
The afternoon match had Alan Byrne’s Jimmy Bruen matched up against Dun Laoghaire in a Leinster South semi final. Dun Laoghaire have been our Nemesis all season. This match was the eighth time we have faced them this season. Of the previous seven matches Dun Laoghaire had won 5 with our only victories being our Under 15 team and our Pierce Purcell team.
To add to the task we were again playing with three matches away.
Our three away pairings were Mark Byrne & Craig Hazelton, Ben Crowley & Cian Gilmore and Collie Dunne & Tom Sheehy while at home we had Tom Byrne & Jamie Anderson and Ray Crotty & Kiaran Dowdall. Early doors it all seemed to be going great, Mark & Craig were 4 up through 7, Ben & Cian were 2 up through 9, Tom & Jamie were 2 up through 9 and Ray & Kieran were a comfortable, 3 up through 9. The only pair to be struggling were Collie & Tom who were 2 down at the turn. Cian & Ben turned the screw and a really strong start to the back nine allowed them to secure the first point for Greystones 6&5, an incredible margin to win any away match. Mark & Craig however weren’t having it all their own way and their Dun Laoghaire opposition clawed their way back into the match and got it back to all square by the 17th tee. Collie & Tom weren’t giving up the ghost and kept the match alive at 2 down through 14.
After some fantastic golf, 5 up through 12 was the nice position that Ray & Kieran found themselves, but an unluckly shot and drop on 13th cost the lads this hole and this was followed by a Dun Laoghaire birdie on 14. After two losses on the trot it was important to try to stop the rot. Ray’s tee shot on 15 however went right but was long enough to find the middle of the 13th fairway and allow Kieran a straightforward lay up on the 13th fairway. Dun Laoghaire played the hole in a more conventional manner and ended up back left of the green in three shots while Ray & Kieran were on the fringe to the back right. Dun Loaghaire played an excellent chip shot from where they were and lipped out for par. This gave Greystones a putt to close the match out which Ray saw just slip by the hole. On to the 16th tee dormie three up. Dun Laoghaire hit to around 15 feet and Kieran’s ball stopped perhaps 5 feet further away.
Meanwhile up ahead, losses for Tom & Jamie on the 15th & 16th had their match back 1 up on the 17th tee. A solid drive and an equally good iron shot had us on the green and when Dun Laoghaoire found the water with their second shot it was as good as over. Tom & Jamie had played some really exceptional golf and were deserving winners. All heads turned once again to the 16th green where Dun Laoghaire made par and the match winning putt this time fell to Kieran who calmly popped it in to seal the tie. This was a really impressive performance by all the players. The Leinster South Final now beckons and hopefully a pennant.
