Congratulations to Gerry Browner’s Powerscourt Cup team who played Bray this afternoon.
It’s never easy to play away from home anywhere and Bray is definitely no exception. You typically have to win your home matches and hope to sneak one away, however that wasn’t how the matches unfolded today.
At home our second pair out, Michael Whelan & Michael Gaughran struggled at the start and were three down after three. They rallied to be just one down after the eleventh but Bray took the advantage in the closing stages and the two Michaels lost the match 4&3.
Our first pair away from home, Maurice Bracken & Simon G. Keane had a nip and tuck match all the way to the eighteenth where they were unlucky to be pipped at the post.
Our second pair away in Bray of Joe Aherne & Michael O’Neill started slowly, all square through seven holes but build up a head of steam from there and won a second vital away point 3&2.
2 to 1 in Bray’s favour at this stage….
Our last match out in Bray saw Heber O’Farrell & Conor Aherne tee it up. They had a similar tight match as Maurice & Simon had however on this occasion the match point went Greystones’ way on the eighteenth.
All to play for then in the last match. A new pairing in this competition, Michael McNaughton & Mark McAleer came up trumps with an excellent home win on the 15th to win 3& 2 and seal the tie for Greystones.
Well done to Gerry and John Browner and their team.
Hard luck to Alan Byrne and Fergal Duffy and their squad who came up just short this afternoon in the Leinster South final of the Jimmy Bruen.
This was the first time since the first round that we held home advantage but unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day.
Our first home pairing of Tom Byrne & Jamie Anderson got off to a great start. They halved the first and won the second and they never looked like they were in any trouble for the rest of their match. They turned four up and won their match 6&5 ( not the first time that they did this ).
Our second away pairing of Cian Gilmore & Ben Crowley had demolished their opposition away in Dun Laoghaire last time out. They won the first and we were all hoping for a repeat performance. Alas it wasn’t to be and despite turning just 1 down, Beech Park pulled away dramatically on the back nine and won the match 5&4.
One all…..
Our third pair at home today, Michael Smullen & Paul Keane were involved in a very tight match and were in touch for most of the round. Constant pressure from the opposition however kept them ahead for the whole match. Two down after nine, became three down through twelve and a loss on the fifteenth closed the match 4 &3.
Advantage Beech Park ….
Our second home pair today of Ray Crotty & Kieran Dowdall have been excellent throughout the campaign but it wasn’t to be their day today. They found themselves three down after seven holes but battled on, winning the eighth & ninth to be just one down at the turn. Beech Park regrouped and won ten and the fourteenth to get to three up with four to play. Ray & Kieran won the par 5, fifteenth and had a great chance to steal the sixteenth but a great up and down from the bunker by their opposition and an unfortunate three putt sealed the match and the pennant for Beech Park 3 & 2.
Our first pair away from home Mark Byrne & Craig Hazelton got off to a great start and were two up after three holes. The opposite number dug deep and didn’t let them run away from there and the match was all square by the time they had completed the front nine. Wins on thirteen & fourteen for Beech Park had them at two up with four to play when called in.
This year’s campaign saw a huge effort from the managers, Alan and Fergal and the entire the squad. They did the club proud in how they represented us all and some of the golf on display during their matches was of a much higher standard then might be expected at this handicap level.
Hard luck and well done to all.

No change at the top after the top three failed to score yesterday so all still to play for.
Our Wicklow Cup team came up against a very strong Dun Laoghaire yesterday evening in their final pool match of the competition. Neil Lawless’s team comprised of a combination of experienced and new players as is normally the case in this competition.
Yesterday’s team included team debuts for Bobby Sherwin, Paul Tilson and Matt Fallon. Bobby played with Milo Doyle and got his representative golf off to a winning start. Brook Mangan and Kallum McCormack halved their match. Our other pairings braving the weather were Marc Lawless & Emmet Gulliver, Tom Murray & Matt Fallon and Kevin Dillon & Paul Tilson.
Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to Lady Captain Iris and her team for running a very successful Pink Day yesterday. The event was very well supported by the Ladies Section ( and Finbarr ).
This is an important week for Greystones team golf with Alan Byrne and Fergal Duffy leading their team out to take on Beech Park in the Leinster South Final of the Jimmy Bruen. This match is for a pennant !!!

Congratulations to Larry & Niall Stokes who shot an incredible 49 points on Saturday to win Vice Captain Danny’s prize to the men. Malcolm Herron & Michael Bolton must have thought they were home and hosed after shooting 47 points but this great score only got them second place. In third place were another father & son combination, Pat & Derek O’Regan who had 46 points.
