2 from 2 for Greystones yesterday as All Ireland Fourball also win
On top of the excellent Barton Cup win yesterday, Gerry Browner’s All Ireland Fourball team brought home another great win yesterday evening. Also drawn against Woodenbridge, Gerry and his team had three away matches so nobody was under any illusions other than it was going to be a tough one. In Woodenbridge, our first pair out of Gerry Browner & Declan Murphy were having a real ding dong match while Michael McDonnell & Colm Drew played really well to win 4&3. Michael McNaughton & John Smith dove tailed nicely to also win, this time by 3&2. Like the Barton Cup earlier we had now won two away matches. At home Gerry had another two strong pairings and Ally Taylor & Conor Lucey won 4&3 to seal the tie for Greystones. In the second home match a birdie for Woodenbridge on the 17th closed the match 2&1 for the visitors against Andrew Keating & Chuck Tarter. Gerry Browner & Declan Murphy were called in while all square on the 18th.
Final result – 3 1/2 to 1 1/2
Congratulations to Gerry and all the team.
Good start for Barton Cup team
Well done to Colm Mulcahy & Eddie Lonergan and their Barton Cup team who had a good win today against Woodenbridge. Two away wins by the Liam Moulton & Colm Mulcahy (on the eighteenth) and Jamie Anderson & David Kirby (an emphatic 5&4 away win) pairings set up an extremely tense finish for the two home matches which had started forty minutes later. Brian Frawley & Trevor Philips seemed to be out of it after eleven holes when they were three down but the fought back to get to one down playing the seventeenth where they eventually lost. With Ray Nolan & Steven Bourne losing away it all came down to the last match at home. Chris Boylan & Rob Tierney played great golf to get to three up with four to play but their Woodenbridge opponents kept them honest and a five on the eighteenth was enough for the match to have to go to the nineteenth. At this stage a large crowd of supporters had gathered adding to the feeling of drama. Neither pair hit the first green and it took a great up and down for par that sealed their match and the overall tie for the home club.
Many congratulations to all involved today.
Portuguese National Seniors winners includes one of our very own ….
Danny Hatton Memorial Medal Winner – Dan O’Byrne
Congratulations to Dan O’Byrne who yesterday won the Danny Hatton Memorial Medal. It was fitting that this medal was won with such an excellent round of golf from Dan. Dan shot 66 off scratch in a round that included four birdies and a single bogey and on a day when the course was set up to play it’s full length. No doubt Danny would have been mighty impressed.
GOTY Table 2022
The 2022 GOTY competition kicked off yesterday with the Danny Hatton Memorial Medal which was won with an impressive 66 by Daniel O’Byrne playing off scratch. Some great scores yesterday overall,on a day when the course played to it’s full length. Click here for the GOTY table – you had to shoot a good 69 to get on the board ! Along way to go however.
Haughton Trophy 2021 settled in a tight finish
Congratulations to Denis Cromie who won the 2021 Haughton Trophy yesterday. Denis shot 71 nett to beat Julian Keown, a past winner of this trophy, on the back nine.
The Haughton Trophy is played for by the winners of the Captain’s Prize, the President’s prize, the Gold Medal winner and the winners of the Class Cups.
Good result for Super Seniors
Well done to Liam O’Shea and Pat Barry and their Super Seniors team who had a great result against Delgany yesterday in the second round of the 2022 Super Seniors. As defending champions it is always a bit tougher (you only have to look at Liverpool last season).
Cathal Cooney & Jerry Teehan remain an unbeaten pairing in two campaigns although they were taken to the eighteenth yesterday, winning 1 up. Pat O’Regan & Pat Raftery halved their match as did Stephen Aherne & Jim Ryan. Eddie Joynt & Denis Cromie came up trumps once again with a 3&2 victory while Alan O’Sullivan & Seán Hynes cruised to a 4&2 win.
4:1 on the night for Greystones.
