Battle of the Boyne – great result for our ladies
Congratulations to Margaret McGirr and her team who today dispatched Druid’s Heath in the first round of the Boyne Trophy competition.
Margaret’s team took full advantage of their home draw.
First out were Marguirete Hamill & Nicky Brooks who went into a flying lead and found themselves five up through ten holes.
Despite loosing the first hole, our second pair of Mary Hutch & Geraldine Nelson took full control of their match from the fourth and closed out on the fourteenth, 6&4. Meanwhile our third home pair of Jenny Moore & Lisa Croke turned two up after nine and kept in control to win on the sixteenth by a margin of 4&2.
The key match turned out to Marguirete & Nicky’s who had to face a very tough fightback from their opposition. They lost four in a row from the twelfth to find themselves just one up but a resilient win on the sixteenth stopped the leakage and despite loosing the seventeenth their half on the eighteenth was sufficient to win their match 1 up and secure the tie for Greystones.
Away from home, both Greystones pairs, Trish Shiel & Liz-Anne Woollam and Trudy Bolton & Aine O’Rourke were two down when called in. Trish & Liz-Anne were on the fifteenth and Trudy & Aine were playing the thirteenth.
Congratulations to all involved.

Jimmy Bruen get over the line
Well done to Gavan McGirr & Pete Murray whose Jimmy Bruen team took on Arklow this afternoon in the first round. Arkow always put out strong teams and today was no different. We had three matches at home, and in the end needed them all to get a 3 – 2 victory and a move to the next round.
In Arklow, wins on nine, ten and eleven got Keith Lewis & Craig Hazelton to 1 up but the home side also won three on the bounce from the fourteenth and won the match 2&1. Also in Arklow, Paul Keane & John Egan came up just short loosing on the eighteenth after winning the sixteenth to get to all square.
Our home pairs were always just about in control but it’s difficult to get over the line as we all know. In the end both the Marc Hamilton & Gerry Kenny and the Eugene Strong & Toby Murphy pairings closed out their respective matches on the seventeenth 2&1 and Walter Gilbert & Craig McCormack won on the fifteenth 4&3.
Well done to all involved.
Barton Shield team comes up just short.
Hard luck to our Barton Shield team who, unfortunately came up just short this afternoon against Hermitage. The format of this competition is a cumulative scoring across two foursomes matches, one home and one away and with all players playing off scratch. The team faced this afternoon by Barry Massey’s and Karl Holmes’ team included much lower handicapped players and one ex-European tour player. The combined handicap of the Hermitage team was +9 whereas ours was 5 – 14 shots in the difference.
In the end both our home and away pairs lost 1 down, giving Hermitage the tie by 2 holes, a very creditable performance by our players.
Hard luck for the ladies’ Revive Active team
Hard luck to Ciara Marmion and her Revive Active team who were beaten by Straffan this afternoon. We had three matches away from home and lost the first two, Mary Hutch and Geraldine Nelson losing 4&3 and Niamh Kielty and Joyce Kirwan going down 3&2. Our first home pair of Ashling Marmion and Liz-Anne Woollam won well, 3&2 but unfortunately Marguerite Hamill and Anne Costello lost on the seventeenth to settle the tie. Iris Haughton and Patricia Moore were one down playing the sixteenth away when called in.
Hard luck to all involved.
