Congratulations to Paul Keane and his squad who have made it to the final of this year’s competition after a convincing win over Woodbrook today in their final round robin match.
Paul had made a number of changes since the last round, bringing in yet more players with an eye on the upcoming Barton Cup campaign.
This afternoon he opted for a new pairing, Eugene Strong & Trevor Phillips to lead the way at home, with Ben Crowley & Niall Stokes together for a second time, out second, after an excellent performance against Powerscourt. The third home pairing was another 2023 campaign rookie pair of Antti Happonen & Ray Crotty.
Away from home, Paul opted for Barry Massey & Walter Gilbert once again, Barry & Walter had an excellent win in Foxrock earlier in the campaign. David Byrne & Anthony Byrne, who won away to Powerscourt last month, played second this afternoon with another new pairing of Ray Nolan & Michael Joyce out last.
A draw this afternoon would have all but ensured a place in the final.
As it turned out, the team earned 2.5 points from 3 at each venue.
Eugene Strong & Trevor Phillips halved their matches in Greystones and Ray Nolan & Michael Joyce did likewise away from home. Emphatic wins at home for Ben Crowley & Niall Stokes (4&2) and for Ray Crotty & Antti Happonen (5&3), set the scene, while in Woodbrook, wins for Barry Massey & Walter Gilbert and for David Byrne & Anthony Byrne (both on 17) dashed the hopes of the Woodbrook team.
So, onwards and upwards to the final which is to take place at a neutral venue on April 15th.
Congratulations to Joe O’Brien and his team who played Woodbrook this afternoon (31st March) in the first round of the 2023 Super Seniors campaign.
Cathal Cooney & Jerry Teehan took up where they left off last season with an emphatic win on the 14th while Walter Gilbert, who played with Denis Cormie this afternoon, matched this performance, winning on the 14th also.
Peter Burke & Eddie Joynt only needed one additional hole for their win on the fifteenth. John Behan and the highly competitive Alan O’Sullivan won 2up on the 17th.
Our final pairing of Stephen Aherne & Ed Murtagh were five down with five to play but put up a great fight, eventually loosing on the seventeenth.
So a 4-1 victory for Greystones. Congratulations to all involved.
First up on Friday (31st March) is part Super Seniors team, managed by Joe O’Brien. Joe’s men face Woodbrook in the first round of this competition with home advantage. Tee off at 13:30.
Then on Sunday our Fitzgibbon team play the last of their round robin matches, knowing that a draw will be enough to get to the final but face tough Woodbrook. Tee off in Greystones is at 13.30 and in Woodwork the first matches tee off at 13:15.
Best of luck to both teams.
Hard luck to the Eamonn Darcy Trophy team who, after an excellent win this morning when they beat Dun Laoghaire, lost out in the final of the competition this afternoon to Woodbrook.
Karl made just one change from the team that won in the morning, bringing in Toby Murphy for Darren McCormack whose back was acting up.
First out was Dylan Holmes who despite a slow start by his high standards fought tooth and nail till the bitter end before losing out 2&1.
Our next singles player, David Byrne had been excellent in his semi final match thais morning, and despite the home advantage of his Woodbrook opponent, David was all square after nine holes. A loss on the tenth was immediately followed by wins on the next two holes for a slender, one hole lead. The match remained tight, with David losing the fourteenth to go back to all square and another loss to a birdie on seventeen, despite an excellent up and down from the bunker, had the shoe firmly on the Woodbrook foot heading to the eighteenth tee box.
Shane O’Connor & Daniel O’Byrne were once again paired together this afternoon and were again out as the last match. Despite going into an early, one hole lead, the pair were back to all square after six and a bad run of four holes from seven to ten saw them at four down. They steadied the ship with a half on eleven but another loss on the twelfth and a scoreline of five down with just six to play proved a mountain to high to climb and the match ended on the fourteenth 5&4.
Ahead of Shane & Daniel were the new pairing of Jamie Anderson & Toby Murphy who were two down through four holes. The lads won the seventh and eight holes to square the match but an immediate loss on the ninth set the tone for the remainder of the match with Woodbrook managing to keep the Greystones team at bay before winning 3&2.
The hero of the semi final, Adam Packman, was out third in the singles once again this afternoon, and once again found himself in a very tight match. In this titanic battle the pair were never separated by more than one hole with the lead swapping back and forth. When called in, Adam was one up, heading for the eighteenth after another good performance.
As all this was unfolding, David was playing the eighteenth. Showing all the composure of a player of his experience, he birdied eighteen to half the match and then birdied the long, par five decider, hitting two excellent shots to hit the green in two, to win the match.
So overall while this goes down as a 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 loss, this team have shown today and throughout the campaign, that they are capable of a lot more in the future.
Well done to Karl, Dermot and all the squad. Well done also to the Grange ladies who won the inaugural Ladies, Eamonn Darcy event this afternoon, beating Woodbrook in the final.
A special note of thanks also to our very own Collie Dunne who conceived of this competition and continues to run it with great efficiency.
Karl Holmes’ & Dermot Whiston’ Darcy Trophy team have progressed to the final after an extremely tight and exciting match win over Dun Laoghaire this morning.
The final will be played in Woodbrook this afternoon with a 13.30 tee time.
In this morning’s matches David Byrne lead from the front with an emphatic 6&5 win.Second out was Dylan Holmes who got himself into an early lead after six holes but the match slipped away from him from there and he eventually lost 3&2.
Adam Packman was our third match in the singles and his match was nip and tuck, turning all square after nine and heading into some extremely challenging holes along the coast in what were wet, cold and windy conditions.
Jamie Anderson & Darren McCormack were our first foursomes pair out and were up against two +2 players. The lads fought hard and were in contention till an unexpected chip on by the Dun Laoghaire on the 6th was followed by a very unfortunate lie in a fairway bunker on the seventh. By the ninth the match had turned from being one up after five to being two down. Wins for the Dun Laoghaire pair on the sixteenth and seventeenth were enough to win the match for them 2&1.
The final match on the course saw the very experienced pair of Shane O’Connor & Dan O’Byrne as anchors. The front nine was tight, turning all square but the Greystones pair showed their experience on the back nine and ran out 3&2 winners.
It all came down to Adam’s match …
Adam lost the tenth to go one down but had the match all square again after a win on thirteen. A most unlikely half on the par three seventeenth ( Adam holing a ten footer for a four ) had the pair head up eighteen all square. The eighteenth was shared in par and Adam had to use all his experience to get another half on the nineteenth after losing his tee shot right. The temporary par three hole which is being played during the construction of the new Woodbrook holes was playing at 140 yards today and when Adam’s opposition hit his shot to eight feet it looked ominous. Pressure being for tyres, and all that, Adam stood up and hit a magnificent shot to five feet. The Dun Laoghaire putt didn’t drop and Adam calmly slotted his home for an excellent 3 – 2 Greystones.
We face the home club, who beat Bray 4-1 in the second semi final.
Best of luck to all.
The ladies annual charity fashion show took place yesterday and boy did they turn on the style.
This years’ event was hosted by stylist Irene O’Brien and raised funds for a very worthy local charity, Greystones Cancer Support.
After a delicious lunch from chef Ali the fashion show itself began with 32 outfits from Ashanti Gold Boutique, Escape Boutique and David Lewis’ shop being modelled.
Liz-Anne Woollam’s event team had put a lot of work in ahead of the event and Olivia & Paul and their respective teams ensured that the event ran perfectly on the day.
The ever elegant Anne Ashe won the best dressed lady with Irene commenting on how well Anne had put her outfit together
Massive thanks, as always to our major Events Sponsors, Gino’s Gelato and Newcastle Design.
Below are some pictures from the event :
Best of luck to Karl Holmes’ Darcy Cup team who play the semi final of this event against Dun Laoghaire at 07.15 on Sunday morning (don’t forget that the clocks spring forward) in Woodbrook.
Should they win the semi final they will face either Bray or Woodbrook, who tee off in their semi final at 08.05, in the final at 13.30.
Live scoring will be available but it would be great to see some on course support in Woodbrook.
Best of luck to all the squad.
Well done to Paul Keane’s Fitzgibbon team who took a step closer to making the final of the 2023 competition this afternoon with a win against a good Powerscourt team.
As usual we had three home and three away for the afternoon tee off.
Tee off in Powercourt was at 13.15 and the first pair out were Brain Murray and Walter Gilbert who started steadily and wins on the forth, fifth and ninth, in pretty miserable conditions, had them two up after the first nine, a nice position to be in.
Second out were the “Byrne Team”, David and Anthony ( no relation ). This pair won the first and were unlucky to lose the second after a lovely pitch by David just checked up. The lads bounced back straight away however, winning the next two holes only to lose the next two to bring the match back to all square. Another win on seven was followed by half on the eighth and an excellent up and down from 100 yards for another half in par on the ninth. So heading for the tenth our noses were in front in the second match also.
Our final away pairing of Murt Davis and Declan Murray got off to a fast start finding themselves two up after four holes, but wobbles on the seventh and ninth and the match was back to level and their opponents were managing the deteriorating weather conditions better. Murt and Declan found themselves two down standing on the thirteenth tee box.
Meanwhile in Greystones Des Cullen and Trevor Phillips lead the team out and went one up after a win on the third, but were pegged back to level after losing the seventh. Eight and nine were shared and the pair walked down the lane as they started on the first.
Second out were Derek O’Regan and Michael Smullen who were in control of their match from the off, with wins on the first and fourth and a two hole advantage heading to the back nine. After eleven, this lead had increased to three and our pair kept the match in their control responding to losses on twelve and fourteen with wins on thirteen and fifteen to move to dormi three up. A half on the sixteenth closed the match out 3&1.
Our final pair in Greystones was that of Ben Crowley and Niall Stokes who it appears had plans elsewhere for the early afternoon ! They halved the first and then reeled off eight successive wins to find themselves eight up after just nine holes. Halves on the tenth and eleventh and Greystones had our first point of the day by a whopping margin of 8&7.
Meanwhile back in Powerscourt Brian and Walter moved to three up with a win on the fourteenth, Walter hitting a glorious seven iron in to find the top tier of the tricky green. It was clear that they had a fight on their hands however when they lost the very difficult fifteenth after Walter’s tee shot found the trees on the left and their opposition made par for the win. Two up and three to play. Another loss on the par five sixteenth, after losing a ball, and it was all getting very close indeed. An excellent up and down on the par three seventh for a half steadied the ship and the match headed to the eighteenth tee with Greystones one up.
As this was playing out, just behind Brian and Walter, David and Anthony had moved to two up with a win on the tenth and then further extended their lead with another win on the thirteenth. Their lead was reduced to two after the fifteenth but crucially the Greystones men were now dormie three up. While all they needed was a half on the seventeenth for the match, an excellent tee shot from David gave the team a win on the hole and a match 3&1 victory.
Having turned two down, Murt and Declan looked in a bit of trouble but they dug deep and trotted off three wins in a row to get to the eighteenth having moved from two down to dormie one up. As it played out however the eighteenth was a bridge too far and a Powerscourt par produced a halved match.
While this was unfolding Des and Trevor were finding the back nine in Greystones more challenging than the front nine with a run of losses from thirteen to fifteen putting them dormie three down. While they won the sixteenth, a half on the seventeenth gave Powerscourt their first win of the day.
The overall match now stood at 3.5 to 1.5 in Greystones’ favour with just Brian and Walter still on the course. At one up with just one to play the pair played the last very well but a lip out from two feet allowed Powerscourt the win the hole with a par.
Overall an excellent result away from home, 2 points, while a solid 2 points at home produced a 4:2 victory ahead of the final match in the group stage which will be against Woodbrook.
Well done to all involved today.
Another great club day was had yesterday as we celebrated the start of our golfing year with our Captains’ Drive-in.
Unfortunately our Girls Captain Isabella Stewart is abroad so it fell to Boys Captain, Jamie Anderson to hit off first. As you might expect he nailed it, and piled the pressure on Lady Captain, Celine who was up next – no bother to her – another fairway hit. Captain John was not to be outdone however and split the fairway himself. Drama over the there captains were then able to relax and enjoy the rest of the day.
Big thanks as alway to our major events sponsors, Gino’s Gelato and Newcastle Design for their great support and to Glendalough Distillery who today provided some very tasty nearest the pin prizes ! Thanks also to Davie, Ben and the pro-shop team who ran the golf side of the day perfectly as always and to Ali and his team for providing a delicious dinner. Liz-Anne Woollam, together with her events committee, worked closely with Paul and Olivia to create a St. Patrick’s Day to remember. Paul and Olivia’s teams made an extremely busy day run like clockwork, not forgetting Liam & Jenny in the office and the ever helpful Nick.
