What a great win for team Europe this afternoon and those lucky enough to get to watch it on the giant screen in the club got to witness the success of Luke Donald’s team in all it’s glory.
The nine hole scramble event held early this morning ahead of the Ryder Cup pitted team Europe ( captained by Lady Captain Celine with Junior Girls’ Captain, Isabella as team vice captain ) against Team USA ( captained by Captain John with Junior Boy’s Captain, Jamie as his vice-captain ). As it turned out, thankfully, this was the only success that Team USA had today with a USA win by a 356 to 351 scoreline.
The front nine two person team event was won by Brian Burke with his guest, Siobhan Whelan (Delgany) who beat Evan Dalton and his guest from Dun Laoghaire, Alexander Flynn into second place.
The back nine competition was won by Phillip and Aoife Dempsey with Finbarr Fay and Tommy Kealy in runner up spot.
Many thanks to Ali, Olivia and the catering team and to Paul Lee and the bar crew for serving up a great brunch to the players.
Many thanks to the legend that is Paul Kimmage and to super host, Risteárd Cooper, for serving up a fantastic evening in the club last Thursday ( 28th).
Rather than a straight interview of Paul by Risteárd, those in attendance were treated to rare insights into both men and many of the famous individuals that they had come across during their careers, as they chatted together on stage.
The discussion took place after a lovely supper, served up by Ali, Olivia and the catering team.
To add even further to the evening, a substantial sum of money was raised for the Irish Hospice Foundation.
These events are possible in large part, due to the support of our events partners, Gino’s Gelato and Newcastle Design and it was great to have Phillip & Helen Hempenstall of Newcastle Design in attendance on Thursday evening.
Congratulations to David O’Toole who won the 2023 Gold Medal with a 71 today, beating Barry Massey by a single shot.
Also on contention today for the Gold Medal were, Rob Hurley, Denis Cromie, Mark Connaughton, Conor Lucey and Antti Happonen.
David’s win moves him to fourteenth in the GOTY but this is not settled yet, with two Class Cup finals outstanding. David Fagan holds a slender lead but M<ark Connaughton can win if he wins his Class Cup final.
Updated GOTY sheet is now on website in the Matchplay section or by clicking here.
Many congratulations to Daniel Hatton who today won President Marguerite’s prize, beating Ray McDonnell 4&3.
The match was tight on the front nine, with Ray making an excellent up and down on the ninth from over the back of the green for a half to turn just one down.
On the back nine Daniel won ten to go two ahead only to be pegged back to one down when Ray won the eleventh with a par. Twelve went to Danny and, when he won the thirteenth when it looked like all the world he was going to loose it, it was looking ominous for Ray at three down. Daniel’s tee shot on fourteen to eight feet was enough to go four ahead and, when Ray could only manage a half on the fifteenth, it was game over. Hard luck to Ray who played some excellent golf to get to the final and of course many congratulations to Daniel, President’s Prize winner 2023.
Some consolation for Ray is the prospect of an upcoming Father & Son son final. Ray & Keith will play Pierce & Shane Power in the final.
Well done to President Marguerite whose beautiful prize was presented to Daniel after the President’s Dinner this evening.
Many thanks to Ali, Olivia and Liz for a most excellent dinner and to Paul and Alan who ensured that all were well watered !
Our Under 15 team have taken a hard fought for point from the first leg of the Leinster Boys Under 15 final.
In nice sunshine this morning our first man out was Conor Dignam who won the first after finding the fairway bunker but from there was up against it. Conor didn’t quite have his A game today and was up against a strong player. A loss on the ninth had him three down at the halfway point on the course and further losses on the opening three holes on the back nine had him in real difficulty. A good win for Conor on the thirteenth stemmed the flow, but only briefly, and a half on the fourteenth saw the match end 5&4.
Ruadhán Murray was out second and was in a level match with no shots being given either way. He earned an excellent half on the first after being in trouble off the tee. He turned two ahead and an excellent par on the fourteenth got the match to three up. The long par three, fifteenth went to Blainroe after Ruadhán found the bunker off the tee and failed to get up and down ( his opponent made birdie in any event ! ) and sixteen was also lost after an errant tee shot from Ruadhán. On the par three seventeenth, the Blainroe man hit an excellent tee shot to ten feet and Ruadhán came up short of the green. An excellent up and down was enough to secure the half and to take a one hole lead to the eighteenth. Ruadhán made a good six on eighteen and when his opponent missed a five footer for par it was one all in the match.
Our last man out today, Toby Murphy was in good form today and striking the ball well but was up against a very strong player and was also giving four shots in the match. At the halfway point, Toby was one under par and two down, his opponent having birdied eight and nine, both with long range putts. Toby continued to play very well on the back nine and his chip in for birdie on fifteen got the match to all square with three to go. Unfortunately he was giving a shot on sixteen and his par there wasn’t enough to win the hole. He held a ten footer to keep the match alive on seventeen and won eighteen with a par to bring the match to extra holes. Back to the first, which Toby had birdied earlier, it was his opponent who made birdie this time around to win the hole and the odd point for Blainroe. Hard luck to Toby who finished his round at level par for nineteen holes.
So, all to play for in two weeks time when Blainroe come to Greystones for the deciding leg.
Well done to Captains Celine & John on their hosting of visiting captains today.
Course – excellent
Food – excellent
Thanks to Liam, Jenny, Olivia, Liz, Ali, Jackie, Paul and Alan for looking after everyone so well.
