Gents Competition Results

Congratulations to Tom Byrne who won today’s medal final with a score of 66 (75 gross).  Tom wins the 2021 Gold Medal and earns 40 GOTY points for finishing 7th today.  Tom plays Declan Murray in President Pat O’Neill’s Prize final next Saturday and is guaranteed at least 90 GOTY points for this also.  This means that win or lose Tom will also lift the Golfer of the Year 2021 trophy, beating both Keith Lewis and Julian Keown by 10 points at a minimum.

Scratch Cups were also decided today.  Congratulations to the winners who are as follows:

Scratch Cups will also be decided tomorrow.  There are 4 players within 6 shots of Alan Condren in Class I (0-5), 15 players within 5 shots of Brian Frawley in Class II (6-12), 11 players within 7 shots of Antti Happonen in Class III (13-20) and 6 players within 11 shots of Peter Fry in Class IV.

Tomorrow’s competition could also very well decide the Golfer of the Year for 2021.  With just tomorrow’s medal final and the final of President Pat O’Neill’s prize (to be played Sat 2nd Oct) remaining there are 7 players who can lift the trophy this year.

So a lot to play for for many players – best of luck to all.

The abridged Carrinson Cup competition was decided this evening in a tightly fought match between Anthony & Mark A. Byrne and Walter Gilbert & Michael Whelan.

This was a flat match and Michael’s tee shot on the first went to around 10 feet with Anthony having missed the green left but pin high.  A great up and down from Mark & Anthony wasn’t enough for even a half as Walter dropped the putt for an opening birdie and to go one up.  After loosing both the second the third Walter & Michael hit another birdie on the fourth to bring the match back to all square. A halved hole on the fifth was followed by a gorse bound drive from Walter on the sixth and Anthony & Mark were one up.  They maintained their lead through the ninth and managed to build up some breathing space and found themselves three up with four to play.

There is an old golf saying about being three up with four to play …..

Walter & Michael birdied the fifteenth to peg the lads back to 2 up and followed this with yet another birdie on the sixteenth to bring the match withing touching distance.  The seventeenth was shared with pars and on the eighteenth green Anthony and Mark needed to get down in two putts for par to close the match out.  We all know how tricky the eighteenth green can be and a unfortunately timed three putt took the match to the nineteenth where a par from Walter & Michael closed the match out.

Congratulations to all four players on a great match and special congratulations to Walter & Michael who win the 2021 Carrinson Cup.

Congratulations to Brian Frawley, Philip Brodeur, Denis Cromie and Dermot Barry who all won their respective Class Cups.

Brian beat Peter Anderson in the Class I final and Philip had to overcome Derek O’Regan in the Class II final.  Class III was the first to be decided last week when Denis beat Finbarr Fay in the final while the last to be played saw Dermot Barry beat Aubrey Shaw in Class IV yesterday.
