Padraig Croke & Pat O’Neill picked a strong team for their opening match of the 2023 JB Carr competition, played yesterday evening (25th April). All matches were played in Greystones.
First out were Paul Keane & Tom Sheehy who got off to a slow start, three down through six but upped their game from there, winning four holes without reply from that point to the thirteenth to move to one up. A loss on fifteen squared the match once again and so it stayed till the Greystones pair made an excellent par on the eighteenth to secure the win.
David Kirby & Martin McNulty were out second and were one up at the half way point and stormed on from there, to win on the sixteenth 4&2.
Third out were Barry Massey & Gerry Browner who plotted their way around, never being behind, to win their match 4&3.
Martin Nolan & David O’Toole were also too strong on the day for their opponents, winning 5&4 while Walter Gilbert & Brian Fawsitt were all square after thirteen holes when called in.
So a 4.5 – 0.5 win for Greystones.
Well done to Padraig, Pat and all the team.
This afternoon (Sun 23rd April) saw both Ladies and Men’s teams in action.
First out were the Ladies Revive Active team, managed by Lisa Croke who were up against a fancied Woodbrook team but, crucially we had three home matches today.
First out at home in this fourball competition were Amanda Lawless & Mary Lockhart. Amanda & Mary found it hard going on the front nine, with consecutive losses on seven and eight not helping matters, and they were three down as they headed for the tenth. The pair registered their first win on the tenth and, buoyed on by this, they struck again on both the twelfth and thirteenth to square the match, heading for the business end of the game.
Second out were Jennifer Moore & Anne Costello who, despite going one down after losing the second hole, stamped their authority from there and turned three up. While a loss on ten briefly halted their march, the pair weren’t going to beaten today and a win with a good par on the fourteenth, followed by halves on the fifteenth and sixteenth were enough to see the pair through and put a point on the board.
This wasn’t the first point on the board however as, almost simultaneously, just behind them on the fifteenth, Jacinta Dean & Aine O’Rourke were closing their match out by a margin of 4&3. Jacinta & Aine came out all guns blazing, playing their way to a brilliant, five up after five start.
2-0 to Greystones.
Meanwhile, away from home, Iris Haughton & Orla Delaney were first out and found themselves two down in the match as the game moved to the sixth tee. From there on however Iris and Orla didn’t do much wrong and four, unanswered wins from the eighth to the eleventh set the platform for an excellent away win 4&3.
The final match away from home saw Sandra Cotter paired with Mary Hutch. This pair played some excellent golf in a very tight match. There was never more than one hole in it and when called in Sandra & Mary were just a single hole behind when called in.
Amanda & Mary, who were unaware of the match being over, managed to complete a great comeback with an excellent up and down by Amanda on the last hole proving decisive to win their match, 1 up.
A great team result, well done to all the players and of course, manager Lisa Croke.
Our Men’s Senior Cup team teed off at 16.00 with two matches at home and three away to Grange Castle. While, on paper, Greystones would have been favourites to win this tie, we have seen in the not too distant past where matches such as these can be a banana skin.
At home today we had Shane O’Connor and Adam Packman while in Grange Castle we had David Byrne, Daniel O’Byrne and Dylan Holmes.
At home, Shane & Adam proved too strong for the high end of the Grange Castle team with Adan closing his match out 7&6 and Shane winning his by 6&5.
Is was tougher in Grange Castle although Dylan got off to to a flier, 1 under and six up through seven. David was also in control of his match but it was a tighter affair while Daniel found himself two down after ten holes.
In the end it was Dylan that sealed the deciding point with a 6&5 win. When called in, David was three up through fourteen and Daniel was one to the good also after fourteen.
Well done to Karl Holmes and all the squad.
