Paul Keane and his Eamonn Darcy team headed to Woodbrook this morning to play the first round robin match in the 2022 competition. Traditionally this competition tends to be played in cold driving rain or worse, but today despite a misty start the matches were played in bright sunshine.
Club President, Neville Galloway saw the team off with our foursomes pairing of Eddie Lonergan & Chris Boylan the first to play. The pair started well and were two up at the turn. Unfortunately, losses on the tenth and eleventh saw their match back to all square.
Due to the late arrival of one of the Woodbrook players the singles matches went out after Eddie & Chris. Leading the singles charge was team captain, David Byrne. David, leading by example, played some great golf and established a three hole advantage after six. He never relinquished this lead and held a twenty footer on the 11th to move to four up before closing his match out on the fourteenth 5&4.
Our second singles player was Shane O’Connor who was in a tight match for the opening holes but a loss on the sixth saw him go one down and by the twelfth tee box he found himself three down. On the fourteenth his opposition chipped in from the fringe to go four up and a half on the fifteenth was enough for a Woodbrook win 4&3.
One all ….
The third singles match saw Dylan Holmes take on an experienced Woodbrook player and, as with Shane’s match the early stages of Dylan’s match were nip and tuck. An errant tee shot which found OB on the tenth however, followed by another loss on the eleventh saw Dylan three down.
Meanwhile, our last match had Brian Frawley & Diarmaid McGabhann paired up after a last minute injury to Niall Gaffney. A slow start had our pair two down after three but a win on the fourth steadied the ship and by the fourteenth they were two up and playing well.
While this was been played out Eddie and Chris saw Eddie’s putt from the fringe on fourteen shave the hole resulting in a loss and from there they were unable to claw their way back into the match despite their best efforts and unfortunately lost 3&2.
So now we had lost two, won one, Dylan was three down but fighting hard to stay in the match and Diarmaid & Brian had their noses just in front.
Dylan won the thirteenth to go back to two down and hit a great approach shot to the fourteenth. Two putts were all he needed to win the hole after an uncharacteristic failure by his opponent to get up and down from the fringe. Woodbrook claimed the fifteenth, back to two down for Dylan and sixteen saw Dylan having to dig deep to win the hole and get the match back to one down. Dylan’s tee shot on the tricky par three, seventeenth was taken right by the wind and he found himself on the fringe while the Woodbrook player hit a great shot in to 15 feet. Holding his nerve Dylan chipped to a foot and a two putt from his opposite number saw the hole halved and they headed to the eighteenth teebox with Dylan still one down.
Back on the fourteenth Diarmaid and Brian made a good half but a trip to the trees off the tee on the fifteenth resulted in a loss for the pair. Back to just one up.
On the eighteenth Dylan had found the fairway while the Woodbrook player was up ahead but in the fairway bunker. Dylan hit great approach shot to a very tricky pin position and was left with ten feet to the pin, albeit with a big break. His opposition did well to make the green from the bunker but looked like he might be in three putt territory and indeed this turned out to be the case. Dylan rolled the ball to beside the hole and claimed a halved match – a great fight back.
Diarmaid & Brian knew then that their match was key and made a great half on the par five sixteenth ( despite being out of position after their second shot ) to stay one up when teeing it up on the par three seventeenth. Woodbrook hit a super tee shot to eight feet while Diarmaid’s tee shot came up short. Our pair made a fantastic up and down to halve the hole and we moved to the eighteenth for the match deciding hole.
Woodbrook chose to take an iron off the tee for safety while Brian opted to go with his driver. Both players found the fairway however Greystones had a thirty yard advantage for the second shot. Woodbrook played a very good shot to fifteen feet but Diarmaid followed with a fantastic shot to eight feet and crucially he had found the right tier on the green.
Two putts each and thank you very much, another win on the day for Greystones and a halved overall match 2.5 / 2.5.
Well done to all involved.

A mixed bag in terms of both weather and results over the weekend of Captain Philip’s prize.
Thursday saw Liam O’Shea and his super, Super Seniors travel to Delgany for their second fixture in this event having secured a great home win earlier this month. It is so hard to win five away matches and this tie ended up as tight as could be. First out were Ray Hogan & Julian Pollard who played great golf and finished with pars on 16 and 17 to win the match. Cathal Cooney & Jerry Teehan never gave up and their match ended in a half. Our third pair of Pat O’Regan & Pat Raftery played great but unfortunately lost on the 16th. 1 1/2 each and it couldn’t have been tighter. It took two strong wins, one by Jim F. Ryan & Alan O’Sullivan on the 18th and the other by Eddie Joynt & Denis Cromie, also on the 18th, to seal this very exciting tie. Next up is a tie away to Woodenbridge.
On a very pleasant afternoon on Friday Tom Byrne’s Senior cup team took on Wicklow with three matches away. As most golfers will appreciate it is never easy to win any match in Wicklow, and the senior cup team were well aware of this having lost to Wicklow last year. Daniel O’Byrne got off to a slow start in Wicklow, never really recovered and eventually lost 5&4. Tom had Gary Dunne out on the third match in Wicklow. Gary has recently returned from the US and has been shooting some great sores but on the day his opponent kept clear air between them and eventually Gary lost out 4&3. Meanwhile at home, Adam Packman was storming ahead. Two up after two, he never looked like he was going to loose and eventually ran out a comfortable winner by a margin of 7&5. Our first match out at home saw Shane O’Connor 1 down through 6 holes, at which stage he hit the Pro button and won 4&3.
It all came down to our first man out in Wicklow, Niall Gaffney. Niall found himself 1 down through 11 and in a ding dong battle for the tie. At 1 down through 15 and on an away course, it didn’t look particularly good, however Niall played some excellent golf to win 16 & 17 to win the match and the tie.
Congratulations to all, next up is a home tie against Dun Laoghaire.
On Sunday Colm Mulcahy’s Junior Cup team took on Dun Laoghaire. On a horrendous day weather wise it was always going to be a struggle but Colm had a very strong team out and hopes were high. At home, our third match out, the normally unbeatable Alan Keane found himself 2 down through 5 holes. He fought back to all square through 7 but lost 8 to go one down. A bad run through 12, 13 and 14 saw the match go Dun Laoghaire’s way as they won out 4&3. In Dun laoghaire our second match out saw Jamie McDonald struggle from the get-go and unfortunately Jamie lost 5&4. With two matches in the bag Dun Laoghaire needed just one to win the tie. At home Diarmaid MacGabhann was in control of his match, albeit by small margins and was 2 up after 14 holes. Dylan Holmes, in the second match was fighting hard in an up and down match and was all square through 16. In Dun Laoghaire Harry Kirk came from two down after 6 to be all square standing on the 18th tee box. Needing all three matches, it was unfortunate for Harry and the team that he got stuck under the lip of a bunker on the 18th and ended up loosing the hole and the tie went Dun Laoghaire’s way.
Hard luck to all involved, a huge effort was put into this competition by Colm, Eddie and the players.
Congratulations to Ray McDonnell who today won the Tyler Cup. The Tyler Cup is competed for by current and past council and committee members. Ray served the club as men’s competitions convener in the past.
Ray also won the singles competition with a great score of 38 points in very testing conditions.
The second qualifying round for the Club Championship ( which is played for the Stephen Cahill trophy ) took place over the weekend.
With the defending champion, David Byrne out of the country the qualifying was lead by Shane O’Connor after round 1 ( gross 69 ). Shane followed this up with another excellent round of golf yesterday shooting 68 gross to enter the draw as leading qualifier. Eddie Lonergan followed his first round 72 with a 69 to qualify in second place. Alan Keane and Jason Hackman followed indifferent rounds by their high standards in round 1 ( 78 & 79 ) with a 71 and 73 to qualify in 5th and 8th spots respectively. Last year’s beaten finalist, Diarmuid MacGabhann lost out on a count-back for 8th place as did Chris Boylan. As in previous years, 1st plays 8th, 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th and 4th plays 5th in the first round.
Full list of qualifiers –
