The Grange GC was the venue for the Irish Mixed Foursomes Leinster South Final where Greystones were to take on Newlands GC.
Under the guidance of Regina Barry and Paul Keane the following team were representing Greystones GC:
- Des Hickey and Helen Creedon
- Geraldine O’Shea and Alan Keane
- Ray Nolan and Sandra Cotter
- Aine O’Rourke and Walter Gilbert.
The Grange GC was in immaculate condition for the match and the golf played by both teams was of equal standard.
Helen and Des led the team out and despite finding themselves 2 down after 5 holes they fought back to be one up after 9 holes.
Next up were Alan and Geraldine who started strong winning the first 3 holes. Newlands won the 5th and 6th but the Greystones pair reasserted themselves winning 8 and 9 to be 3 up heading to the 10th.
Sandra and Ray were 3rd up and got off to a tough start and were 3 down after 6. They won the 7th to be 2 down at the turn.
Walter and Áine were last out and got off to a great start and were 2 up through 4. Despite the Newlands pair Walter and Áine won the 7th, 8th and 9th to be 4 up heading for the back 9.
Geraldine and Alan continued their great play winning 10 and 12 to be 5 up. A couple of halves gave Greystones their first point by a margin of 5 & 4.
Des and Helen also kept the pressure on their opponents extending their lead to 2 up after 11. Newlands got a hole back on 12. Again the Greystones pair exerted the pressure on their opposition by winning 14 & 15. Again Newlands came back with a birdie on 16. A par on 17 was enough for Helen and Des to win 2 & 1 to put Greystones two nil up and only needing a half to claim the pennant.
Ray and Sandra found themselves 3 down despite winning the 10th. The Greystones pair were not going to throw in the towel and won 14, 15 and 17 to get back to all square.
Áine and Walter went further ahead by winning 11 and were now 5 up. The Newlands pair responded with 4 wins in a row and suddenly Greystones were one up.
So we needed a half point whether it was from Ray and Sandra or Walter and Áine. As it transpired, Walter and Áine halved 17 at the same as Sandra and Ray won 18 to give Greystones a 3.5 to 0.5 win.
So another blue pennant for the club and an opportunity to get the covered Green All Ireland pennant. The quarter finals will take place in Oughterard on Saturday 13th September. Further details will follow.
Congratulations to Regina Barry and Paul Keane along with all the squad on bringing another pennant back to the club.
