Mark Byrne with the assistance of his brother Anthony sent his Leinster Men’s Trophy (formerly Metropolitan) team out in their 2nd round match against Powerscourt. Today we had the home advantage of 4 matches at home and 3 away.
On a beautiful sunny day with a stiff breeze from the north Keith McDonnell led the team out at home and was in a strong position of 3 up after 9. Second out was Eddie Davis and he took was in a similar position of 3 up through 9. The youngest member of the team was up next and Ruadhan Murray was 2 up at the turn. Last up at home was Henry Gilbert, this was a much tighter affair and Henry turned 1 down.
Away from home Fergal Duffy was level, Paul Keane 1 down and Peter Nolan was 6 (yes 6) up all through 9.
So at the turn the overall match was still close. However Greystones turned on the style from there on.
Peter finished his game off quickly 8&6. Next to finish was Eddie winning 4&3 followed by Keith winning 2&1 despite his opponent fighting back. Ruadhan then clinched the winning points on 16 3&2. The remaining matches were called in with Henry 2 up through 15, Fergal all square through 14 and Paul 2 up through 14.
Final result was 5.5 to 1.5 in favour of Greystones. On to the 3rd round for Mark Byrne and his team.
