Ben Crowley’s Under 15 boys team headed to Edenderry this afternoon to play the Leinster South Round 3.
Conor Dignam was out first and really didn’t get going today and, adding insult to injury, was up against a tough opponent. Conor will be disappointed with how his match panned out, four down through nine his day was done after thirteen, 7&5.
Number two today was Ruadhán Murray who has been playing very well recently. Ruadhán turned three up but the back nine proved less one sided. The tenth and eleventh were halved before an Edenderry win on the twelfth. Ruadhán came back straight away however, winning the next. The fourteenth went to Edenderry also and the match was back to two up for Greystones.
The normally, ever dependable, Toby Murphy was the last man on the tee this afternoon. Last man out in this competition is always the lowest player on each team and Toby and his opponent were fairly well matched today. The front nine went Toby’s way and he turned one to the good. After halving ten, Toby lost eleven but won twelve. A win for Edenderry on thirteen levelled the match but Toby upped the level here and won fourteen and fifteen to take a two hole lead with three to play.
With Edenderry just needing one more to take the tie Ruadhán’s opponent was digging deep and his two hole lead was further reduced when sixteen went to the home team. One up with two to play – never a doubt – Ruadhán played the seventeenth perfectly to win the hole and his match 2&1.
All down to Toby now but he lost the sixteenth, adding some tension to a sideline who were already feeling the pressure. The tension raised another notch higher when the match was levelled after seventeen.
With one regulation hole left to play it couldn’t be tighter, but Toby proved his metal once again chipping in to birdie the last to win the hole, his match and the tie.
Congratulations to Ben and the whole team – a great performance away from home.
