Hard luck to Orla Delaney and her Boyne Trophy team who lost out in their semi-final against Killiney this morning (24thJuly).
Orla’s ladies had three away matches, which can be very tricky at times and so it turned out today.
At home Jennifer Moore paired with Anne Browner were out first. Anne thoroughly enjoyed playing with such an experienced match player today and the pair stormed into a four hole lead after nine and ran out 7&5 winners on thirteen. Not to be outdone, our second pair of Trish Shiels, another player with lots of matchplay experience, and Grace Dodd were also on fire today. Trish & Grace turned six ahead and wins on ten and eleven closed their match out by, an almost unfriendly, 8&7 🙂
Two home wins, while great, are never enough on their own however and, away from home in Killiney our ladies were not having it their own way at all.
Out second, Mary Hutch & Sandra Cotter were one down after nine and playing well in a tight game. The Greystones pair levelled the match with a win on twelve but lost fourteen and seventeen to give the home team their first point of the day.
The third match in Killiney saw Jacinta Dean paired with Aine O’Rourke for Greystones. Jacinta & Aine got off to a slow start and found themselves three down after four. Like Mary & Sandra they were playing decent golf but couldn’t quite get to grips with their Killiney opposition. A win on fifteen got the game back to just one but halves on fifteen and sixteen were sufficient for a second Killiney 2&1 win and their second match point.
While all this playing out, our first away pair of Niamh Kielthy & Regina Barry were playing some excellent golf in the first match. Their game was all square after nine but the Greystones pair got to two ahead with wins on ten and eleven. This remained the score after sixteen and, at dormie two ahead it looked like we might have the edge in the tie. Seventeen went to the home team however, as did eighteen and the players moved back to the first in an attempt to settle the tie. It just wasn’t to be for Orla and her team today unfortunately and the nineteenth hole and the overall tie went to Killiney.
This was the end of an excellent 2023 campaign from Orla and her team but they produced some excellent and entertaining golf for supporters during the year.
