Congratulations to our Irish Junior Foursomes and Ladies Revive Active teams who both came through their matches this afternoon (4th June) with flying colours.
First out this afternoon were Peter Andersons’ Irish Junior Foursomes team who had a potentially tricky away fixture against Dun Laoghaire Golf Club. President Marguerite, Lady Captain Celine and Vice Captain Mark were on hand hand to see the team off.
An injury to Dylan Holmes meant a team reshuffle yesterday but Peter has a great squad to choose from and was still able to field a strong team.
Toby Murphy & Milo Doyle led out first and were giving two shots. The pair looked comfortable right from the start, winning the first four holes and maintaining that lead after six.
Our second pair of Junior Boy’s Captain, Jamie Anderson & William O’Riordan were giving five shots had started a little slowly by their standards and were one down after six holes but crucially the team were up three up on aggregate.
At the halfway point Jamie & William were still one down but had found their rhythm and were playing very nicely. Tony & Milo traded holes seven & eight and halved the ninth to stay at four up.
On the back nine, Jamie & William threw in a few birdies to wrest control of the match from their opposition and were three up after fifteen.
Despite losing the fifteenth, Toby & Milo were still four up in their match and when both pairs halved the sixteenth the match was done – seven up with just four to play.
Next up will be either Bray or Wicklow in the Leinster South final which is to be played on July 2nd in Edmonstown.
Lisa Croke had negotiated a great win for her Revive Active team when they played Woodbrook at the end of April and was hoping for a similar performance today against Coollattin Golf Club.
Lisa has assembled an incredibly strong squad and had a strong team out this afternoon. Jacinta Dean was looking after the home venue while Lisa made the trip to Coollattin.
Shots are given / received in this fourball competition. Our first pair out of Aisling Marmion & Amanda Lawless were giving one of their opponents nineteen shots but, despite this, our pair were on the ball this afternoon and stormed into a five hole lead after the first nine. Further wins on the tenth and twelfth sealed the match 7&6.
Second out at home were Sophie Lumley & Mary Lockhart who had played so well together in the Senior Foursomes last week. Once again the partnership worked, Sophie & Mary were four up through nine and then won ten to go five up.
Through no fault of theirs Mary & Sophie’s match was very slow, and, by the ninth our third home match of Jennifer Moore & Aine O’Rourke had to be called through. Jennifer was playing great and Aine was coming in when called upon and like Sophie & Mary were four up after nine and five up through ten.
Meanwhile away in Coolatin Niamh Kielty & Joyce Kirwan were playing very well and while they turned just one up, a win on ten gave them a little buffer while another on the fourteenth had them at three up.
Mary Hutch & Sandra Cotter were our final pair away from home and were in a very tough match also. A win on nine got their noses in front but their opposition got off to a stronger start on the back nine, winning ten, twelve and thirteen to get ahead by two. Mary & Sandra were not going to beaten easily however and fought hard to square the match with wins on the fifteenth and sixteenth.
Back home, Jennifer & Aine halved eleven, and an excellent par on twelve for a half by Aine kept the scales tipped very much on their side. Despite a loss on the thirteenth they closed out their match with a win on the fifteenth 5&3.
2-0 to Greystones
The slow pace of play was taking a toll on Sophie & Mary as they lost three holes on the trot from eleven to thirteen but an excellent win on fourteen got them back to three up as they headed for the par five.
In Coollattin, Joyce & Niamh lost sixteen to go back to two up with two to play and a solid half on the seventeenth was enough to close their match 2&1 and the overall tie for Greystones.
When called in, Sophie & Mary were three up through fourteen and Mary & Sandra were all square through sixteen.
Another great performance from Lisa and her team.
