Karl Holmes’ Fred Daly team took on Edmonstown in the quarter final of the Leinster South Section this afternoon.
At home, the team was lead out by Dylan Holmes with Jamie Anderson at number 2 and Jack McGovern as anchorman.
Away from Home Karl had sent Steven Gormley and Toby Murphy. The subs for today were Marc Lawless and Milo Doyle.
Despite losing the second to go one down, Dylan, who was playing a scratch golfer today, played excellent golf to get to the turn at two up and looking very much in control.
Both Jamie and Jack were dominant in their matches, each only losing a single hole in their respective matches and both winning by a margin of 6&5.
Away from home, Steven was up against a strong player but was playing very good standard of golf and turned four up. His opponent held some brilliant putts on the back nine however and clawed the match back to dormie two down in Steven’s favour.
Second out in Edmonstown was Toby Murphy who lost the first and had to play good golf to have the match at all square after nine. More excellent work on the back nine saw the match go to dormie three in Toby’s favour.
Meanwhile, back home, Dylan had his match at dormie three up also, so without wishing to count chickens, it looked like it was a matter of who might win the final point first.
Toby had a great chance on the sixteenth – then his opponent holed his bunker shot for a birdie, Steven might have finished his match on the seventeenth had his opponent not held a thirty foot downhill putt so in the end it was Dylan who closed out his match first with a win on the sixteenth, 4&2.
Next up will be either Elm Park or Grange in the semi-final.
Well done to Karl, Peter Anderson and all the team.
