Karl Holmes’ & Dermot Whiston’ Darcy Trophy team have progressed to the final after an extremely tight and exciting match win over Dun Laoghaire this morning.
The final will be played in Woodbrook this afternoon with a 13.30 tee time.
In this morning’s matches David Byrne lead from the front with an emphatic 6&5 win.Second out was Dylan Holmes who got himself into an early lead after six holes but the match slipped away from him from there and he eventually lost 3&2.
Adam Packman was our third match in the singles and his match was nip and tuck, turning all square after nine and heading into some extremely challenging holes along the coast in what were wet, cold and windy conditions.
Jamie Anderson & Darren McCormack were our first foursomes pair out and were up against two +2 players. The lads fought hard and were in contention till an unexpected chip on by the Dun Laoghaire on the 6th was followed by a very unfortunate lie in a fairway bunker on the seventh. By the ninth the match had turned from being one up after five to being two down. Wins for the Dun Laoghaire pair on the sixteenth and seventeenth were enough to win the match for them 2&1.
The final match on the course saw the very experienced pair of Shane O’Connor & Dan O’Byrne as anchors. The front nine was tight, turning all square but the Greystones pair showed their experience on the back nine and ran out 3&2 winners.
It all came down to Adam’s match …
Adam lost the tenth to go one down but had the match all square again after a win on thirteen. A most unlikely half on the par three seventeenth ( Adam holing a ten footer for a four ) had the pair head up eighteen all square. The eighteenth was shared in par and Adam had to use all his experience to get another half on the nineteenth after losing his tee shot right. The temporary par three hole which is being played during the construction of the new Woodbrook holes was playing at 140 yards today and when Adam’s opposition hit his shot to eight feet it looked ominous. Pressure being for tyres, and all that, Adam stood up and hit a magnificent shot to five feet. The Dun Laoghaire putt didn’t drop and Adam calmly slotted his home for an excellent 3 – 2 Greystones.
We face the home club, who beat Bray 4-1 in the second semi final.
Best of luck to all.
