Well done to both our teams who played today (26th Feb).
First out were our Darcy Cup men’s team, managed by Karl Holmes and Dermot Whiston, who faced Druid’s Heath in Greystones. The lads were up early to tee off at 07.30 and were led out by Dylan Holmes who turned on the style with an early 7&5 win. Jamie Anderson was our number 2 player today and despite playing well, went down 2&1. Jamie’s undoing was on the first nine and even a level par back nine wasn’t enough on the day to eke out a win. Out third was Darren McCormack who was in a tight match all the way through, turning one up but unfortunately a loss on the eighteenth meant his match was halved.
In our foursomes matches we had David Byrne and Toby Murphy who were out first and controlled their match from the get-go. David & Toby eventually won easily by a margin of 5&4. In contrast, our second pairing of Dan O’Byrne and William O’Riordan had a tough day and never got a hold of their match. A loss on the ninth had them three down and they fared no better on the back nine, losing 4&3 in the end.
2 1/2 : 2 1/2 was a decent result in the end and ensures a semi final spot for this team.
Later this morning Paul Keane had our Fitzgibbon team in action for their first outing of 2023. Playing Foxrock with three matches home and three away, we had a staggered start with a 10:50 start away and a 13:30 home tee time.
Away from home our first pairing were David Kirby & Craig McCormack who, after finding themselves one down after two, went on a run of five wins in a row on holes three through seven and dominated from there to win their match 5&4. Barry Massey & Walter Gilbert were out next and had an even easier route to their 6&4 win, not loosing a single hole in the match in what was an impressive performance. Our final pairing of Ben Crowley & Michael Joyce had a much different encounter. Five down through ten holes the pair looked dead and buried. They had their first win on the eleventh and stuck to the task from there, securing a good halved match with a winning par on the eighteenth.
So 2 1/2 : 1/2 from the away team in the bag…..
Meanwhile, in Greystones, our second pair of Chris Boylan & Mark A. Byrne looked unbeatable early doors and so it turned out to be with the pair winning easliy, 7&6. Our first pair, Des Cullen & Trevor Phillips also looked a good pairing on paper and they delivered in spades today, winning their match comfortably 4&3. Our final pair of Derek O’Regan & Fergal Duffy were three down after nine but got their match back to one down after twelve. Unfortunately losses on the thirteenth and fourteenth had them back to three down when they were called in.
A good performance for the Fitzgibbon team on their 2023 debut…
