Our Ladies’ Darcy team welcomed Dun Laoghaire to Greystones this afternoon. It was always going to be a tough tie given the handicap range of our players today. Tough it may have been but there was no lack of effort and we saw some excellent performances from the Greystones ladies.
First out was our top player, Aishling Marmion who was excellent today. The matches today were played over a fourteen hole course and after seven Aishling had secured a two hole advantage. While she lost eight and nine she came back strongly, winning the tenth and twelfth holes restoring her advantage. She was unlucky to lose thirteen but a par on the fourteenth was enough to secure a win for Greystones, 2 up.
Sophie Lumley had secured an excellent point away to Woodbrook in the previous round. That day Sophie had played in the foursomes along with Deirdre Ahern but today she faced a strong player in the singles. Unfortunately for Sophie today was an even tougher assignment and, despite being just one down after five, her opponent then pulled away to win the match 4&3.
Third out was Mary Lockhart who played very well and, after an excellent win on the seventh was just two down after seven. At three down after nine however, given the match was only over fourteen holes, Mary was running out of holes. Dun Laoghaire eventually ran out as 4&3 winners.
Our first foursome pair out included the aforementioned Deirdre Ahern who, this time around was partnered with Shauna Seifried. Deirdre and Shauna won the first and were all square and very much in the match after seven. Loses on the eight and ninth however gave them an uphill battle and even after a great win on the tenth it was a bridge just too far today. A loss on the eleventh sealed the match after a very creditable performance by the Greystones pair.
Last out today were team manager, Jacinta Dean and ladies’ teams co-ordinator, Amanda Lawless. This pair put in a tremendous performance today, even without taking handicaps into account. Jacinta held some amazing putts, including a long range effort for par on the first, while both players played excellent golf the whole way around. With the match finely poised at all square after eleven perseverance won out on the twelfth for the home players with both pairs in trouble off the tee. One up and two to play but unfortunately Greystones found the water in two on the thirteenth and the match was back to all square. A great tee shot by Amanda on the fourteenth was converted to a par and the match was halved.
Overall a good performance and well done to all involved.
