Congratulations to Karl Holmes’ Darcy Trophy team who got off to a winning start today ( 8/1/23 ) with a good away win to Druid’s Heath Golf Club.
With an average age of just 22, including the relative veteran Shane O’Connor, this might well have been the youngest team to ever line out for a Senior team in Greystones at this level.
First out was Shane in the singles and he started off in great form, storming into a three up lead after four holes but his Druids opponent fought back and it took all Shane’s game smarts to eek out a halved match in the end. Daniel O’Byrne started like a train also and was four under for the first five holes and five up in the match. It looked like it might be an early shower for his opponent but as often happens in matchplay Daniel had to fight hard in the end to win by a margin of 3&2. Our third singles player was fifteen year old Toby Murphy who faced a very experienced operator. Toby played well tee to green and had his chances on fifteen and sixteen but in the end went down by a margin of 3&2. This was great experience for Toby however and he is definitely a star of the future at this level.
Our first foursomes pairing were David Byrne and Dylan Holmes. Both David and Dylan played some excellent golf today and always looked in total control of their match turning four up. With Niall Gaffney and Gary Dunne on the bags the pair didn’t let up and ran out 5&4 winners.
Our final pairing of Jamie Anderson (Junior Captain) & William O’Riordan, (with a combined age of thirty one) played exceptionally well also against their far more experienced opposition in what was a nip and tuck match from the off. A win on the ninth got their match back to just one down, and another on the fifteenth squared the match. The two boys hit three exceptional iron approach shots to the final three holes to earn a half in the match and secure the overall win for the Greystones team by a margin of 3-2.
Well done to all involved and to all the supporters who came out this morning to support the team
