Our Junior Cup team were up against in today with 3 away matches playing Powerscourt in the quarter finals of the Leinster South regional section.
With Lisheen Springs and Carrickmines through to the semi finals the remaining two spots were to be decided by today’s match and the other remaining fixture between Rathfarnham and Castle.
At home today we had Kenny Lewis and Diarmaid MacGabhann while our away team was Chris Lawless, Jamie Anderson and Brian Frawley. Diarmaid, Kenny and Brian forwent Captain Danny’s dinner last night in preparation ( congratulations to Diarmaid who featured ) and this sacrifice paid off today.
Diarmaid was at his very best again today and produced an almost flawless performance, only conceding one hole in his 6&5 victory.
In Powerscourt, on the very tricky East Course, Chris was out first under the watchful eye of Captain Amanda. Chris turned two up but had to fight tooth and nail to try to stay ahead and after thirteen holes the match was back to all square. Chris won the fourteenth however to go back into the lead and halves on the attention grabbing fifteenth and sixteenth, and the very difficult par three seventeenth in Powerscourt were enough to win his match 2&1.
Kenny, who was out first at home, had a tighter match than Diarmaid and turned two down. Wins however, on the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth established a one hole advantage for Kenny which he still held standing on the seventeenth teebox. Kenny played the hole well and won it with a par to win his match, and close the tie in our favour.
Meanwhile, Jamie was doing what he does best in Powerscourt, getting his nose out in front and keeping it there. He turned two up and won the eleventh to go three up. Then his opposition hit him with a birdie, par, birdie barrage from the thirteenth to go one up. Jame was called in while playing the sixteenth, one down but in a good position to have won the hole.
Brian had turned two down but won the tenth and eleventh to get the match back to even. The pair traded holes for the next three and when called in Brian was on down through fourteen.
Very well done to Brian, Ray and all the team today – great job!
