Iris Haughton’s Challenge Cup team faced Carton House with a tough three matches away from home yesterday afternoon.
Despite starting brightly with a win on the first, our first away player, Patricia Moore found herself on the back foot at three down after nine but to Patricia’s credit she was still in the match on the seventeen which she was unlucky to lose. The final score in this match was a win for Carton House 3&1. It was a tough day on the exceptionally long Carton House Course for Wendy Lee, our second player out away from home. Wendy came up against a player very much on her A game and, despite fighting hard, her match ended with another victory for Carton House 5&4.
At home, Linda Walsh was playing great and a win for her on the ninth brought her match back to all square. A loss on the tenth was offset by a win on the thirteenth and Linda closed out her match with wins on seventeen and eighteen to win 2up. Grace Dodd played second at home and turned just one up. A win on the fifteenth gave Grace a two hole cushion but her opponent won the sixteenth to keep the pressure on and it took strong nerves from Grace to close out the match on with a win on the seventeenth by a margin of 2&1.
It all came down to our third match away which saw Regina Connaughton up against a very competitive Carton House player. At two down after five, Regina needed to gather herself, which she did with wins on six and eight to turn all square. Regina then won three holes on the trot from the tenth to put herself in a strong position, three up with six to play. It’s never easy of course and her opposition played good golf to win two on the bounce herself and to bring the match to one up for Greystones with three to play. Regina played the sixteenth and seventeenth well to win both and to close her match out 3&1 and to seal the overall tie for Greystones 3 – 2. A great win, especially with three matches away.
