Congratulations to Mags Smith and her Junior Cup team who had a strong win this afternoon against Rathfarnham.
It’s always great to have home advantage in these matches however it might not have been any different a result in this case given the emphatic nature of the win.
First out at home was Aisling Marmion, who took up exactly where she left off after her fantastic performance in the Senior Cup last weekend. A win on the first was followed by a run of five halved holes before Aishling put the foot down, winning the next six holes, from the seventh to the twelfth to win her match 7&6.
Our second player out at home today was Inesa O’Gallagher. Inesa needed to fight hard to stay in this match after losses on the first and second and she obliged, winning the next three holes to turn the match around and go one up after five holes.
Our final home match saw Niamh Kielty give no quarter to her opposition from the outset. Niamh went down the lane to the tenth three up and wins on eleven and twelve gave her a commanding lead. A half on the fourteenth was all that was needed in the end to secure Greystones’ second point of the day 5&4.
Away from home our first player, Mary Lockhart was under pressure after nine, turning three down however a spirited fightback on the back nine and a win on the seventeenth meant it was all still to play for on the eighteenth. Rathfarnham however had a one hole lead and secured the half needed to win the match 1 up.
Our second away player, Marguerite Hamill was four down after five holes but had a purple patch with four wins from the eighth to the eleventh to bring the match back to all square. Marguerite’s opponent struck back with another barrage on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth to gain the upper hand once again. A Greystones’ win on the sixteenth kept the match alive but Rathfarnham closed it out on the seventeenth for a 3&1 win.
Two points each at this point…
A loss on the sixth for Inesa followed by halves on seven eight and nine meant that her match turned all square. A good win on ten got her nose in front but unfortunately this was negated immediately by a loss on the eleventh. Inesa knows how to win a match however and she took the twelfth before a really strong run of three wins on the bounce from the fourteenth to the sixteenth, closed her match by a margin of 4&2 and secured an overall victory for Greystones.
Congratulations to all involved.
