A mixed bag for the teams this weekend.
First out yesterday were our Senior Cup team yesterday who are playing Woodenbridge in the second round of this competition. Unfortunately we didn’t fire on the day and lost 3.5 to 1.5. Daniel O’Byrne delivered the home team point away in Woodenbridge, winning on the eighteenth. Also playing away were Darren McCormack and Brian Frawley who lost 2&1 and 4&2 respectively. At home David Byrne uncharacteristically pulled his tee shot left on eighteen and lost the hole and his match to secure the tie for Woodenbridge. Shane O’Connor was one up, playing the eighteenth when called in.
On Sunday, first out were our Fred Daly team who started as absolute underdogs against Elm Park. This competition is played of scratch and in order of handicap. For perspective, Elm Park had a collective handicap of 0.5 for their three players in Elm Park ( +2.0, 0.7 and 1.8 ) playing Dylan Holmes ( 3.6 ), Jamie Anderson ( 3.8 ) and William O’Riordan ( 5.5 ). At home in Greystones Toby Murphy ( 6.0 ) played a player off ( 2.5 ) and Jack McGovern ( 7.1 ) played the Elm Park high man ( 5.3 ).
In Greystones our lads struggled and we lost both matches, Jack loosing 4&3 and Toby 3&2 but critically never giving up and fighting to the bitter end as we have come to expect from them. In Elm Park however our three lads played superbly, Jamie followed up his excellent 71 in yesterday’s Medal with an excellent performance, winning 5&4. Dylan had to fight hard to beat his +2 opponent and won the sixteenth and seventeenth holes for a superb 2&1 win. William was two up at this stage and played really well but unfortunately lost on the nineteenth. They ( and we ) should all be immensely proud of their performance today.
Straight after our Fred Daly team, Ciara & Frank Marmion’s Irish Mixed team played Old Conna at 14.00 with three away matches, always tricky.
In a dominant display away from home, our first pair out, Chris Boylan & Anne Costello won their match 4&2. At home David Byrne & Lisa Croke closed out their match 4&2 and Eddie Lonergan and Aine O’Rourke wasted no time on the course, winning 6&5.
Diarmaid MacGabhann & Polly O’Reilly came up against a pair that were just too strong up in Old Conna and were dormie four down when called in. In contrast Brian Frawley and Ger O’Shea were dormie four up when called in.
A great win for the team.
After the mixed, at 14.30 our Ladies Senior Foursomes played Bray with two home matches.
Our second home pair of Iris Haughton & the in-form Isabella Stewart were in unbeatable form and won their match easily 7&6 but unfortunately our away pair of Mary Hutch & Aishling Marmion, while turning one up, were unable to stay ahead and four losses on thirteen to sixteen saw the match go to Bray 4&2. The match then came down to our first pair out at home, the experienced, Mary Lockhart & Niamh Kielty. They found themselves two down through nine holes however wins on thirteen and fifteen brought the match back to all square but Bray fought back hard, winning the sixteenth and eighteenth holes to win 2 up and close the tie in Brays favour.
Hard luck to Via Maume and her team.
Finally Ed Davis & Anthony Byrne’s Metro team had four home matches and three away matches V Old Conna.
We had high hopes for our final team out today. Unfortunately, while we had an early match win with a stand out performance by Conor McAleer who won 6&5 in Greystones that was cancelled by a dominant performance by Old Conna at home. Both Eoin Corrigan and Mark A. Byrne lost their matches in Old Conna 6&4 and 4&2 respectively and strong performances by the Old Conna team in Greystones in the matches against Gavin Nolan ( win on 18 ) and Philip Dempsey ( win 2&1 ) ensured victory in the tie for Old Conna. Colm Mulcahy was one down playing eighteen away while Derek O’Regan was one up through fifteenth in his home match.
Many thanks and congratulations to all the players and management teams who represented our club so well over the weekend.
