What a great result this evening for Liam O’Shea and his Super Seniors team.
Our number 2 pairing at home, Eddie Joynt & Denis Cromie ( who won his Class Cup earlier in the week ) were in great form. They were never down in their match and were one 1 after 6. They followed a half on the 7th with wins on the 8th, 9th and 10th to go into a commanding 4 up lead. This changed back and forth 3 up – 4 up – 3 up and back to 4 up on the 14th before the pattern was broken with another win by Eddie & Denis on the 15th to close the match out 5&3.
Meanwhile at Naas G.C. our second pairing of Pat O’Regan & Pat Raftery found themselves 2 down after 2 holes but they fought hard and were just 1 hole down at the turn. Naas turned on the style then however and won a string of holes in succession, 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th and the game was over 5&4.
Back in Greystones, our first pair out were Ray Hogan & Julian Pollard who traded blows with their opposition for the front 9 and got to the turn all square. A loss on the 11th had us 1 down. Holes 12 through 16 were all halved in a very tight match however another loss on 17 meant a home loss and a win for Naas 2&1.
While we were 2 – 1 down at this stage in the match, both teams had lost a home match so it was still very much game on and in our own hands.
Our third home match saw a new pairing in this campaign of Alan O’Sullivan & Sean Hynes. They might have been a new pairing but they played some great golf and were 1 up after 9. A win for Greystones on the 10th followed by a Naas win on the 11th kept it tight. Greystones moved back to 2 up after a win on the 13th and halves on 14th, 5th and 16th kept everyone more than interested. Our lads kept their nerve and won the 17th to close the match 3&1.
2 all with one match still on the course at Naas.
If Eddie & Denis had a comfortable day then the same couldn’t be said for Cathal Cooney & Jerry Teehan. Cathal & Jerry have been outstanding in the campaign to date but found themselves 3 down after 9 holes and had the team assistant manager, Pat Barry watching on tenterhooks. Never a pair to give up they put a fantastic run of holes together winning 6 holes on the trot from the 10th to the 15th. Their Naas opposition also had the capacity to dig deep and they pegged us back with wins on the 16th and 17th before the Greystones duo delivered with a win on the 18th and a 2&1 match win and the deciding point in the fixture.
Many congratulations to Liam, Pat and all the team. Next up is the semi final !
