Our Under 15s began their campaign with a 5 nil win away to Blainroe in the first leg of their first round tie. This is a handicapped competition and inevitably shots are given when you field a team of low men which was the case today.
Mark Lawless got off to a blistering start and opened the Greystones account with an excellent 8&7 win, followed by Jamie Anderson who finished his match on the 14th. Not to be outdone, Dylan Holmes also finished his match on the 14th. With Jack McGovern and William O’Riordan left on the course, things got a bit tighter. William won 15 & 16 to go dormie and on the signature 17th par 3 missed out on a hole in one by what looked to be less than an inch after hitting a glorious shot and finished his match there. Jack teed it up on the par 5 18th at 1 up. His opponent hit a monster drive and Jack had to hit ( an excellent ) lay up to 30 yards from the rough. Blainroe’s man hit a great second shot but caught the green-side bunker. Jack pitched to 10 feet and his opponent hit a bunker shot to 20 feet. Typically, as happens in matchplay, Blainroe holed the putt for birdie. Jack showed tremendous character to follow him in for birdie also to win the match and give Greystones clean sweep. Milo Doyle was our reserve player today and also won out 5&4 in the reserve match. A note of thanks to the very young Blainroe team for the sporting manner in which all the matches were played and to the club for their hospitality.
