There were mixed results for our teams today.
First out were our Senior Cup team who were playing Old Conna in the first round. Tom Byrne’s team had three matches at home but it’s never easy to win at this level.
First out at home was the ever reliable Shane O’Connor who, after what was a slow start by his standards romped home to a 6&5 victory. Not such good news for our second man out, Sean McParland who found himself well down after the first nine but, as you would expect from Sean he battled hard to keep the match alive till the 14th. Veteran 🙂 Eddie Lonergan had too much in the tank for his opposition on the day and won out by a 4 & 2 scoreline.
Away from home Daniel O’Byrne got off to a good start and kept the pressure on his opponent to win 3&2 to seal the tie. Adam Packman was still on the course at Old Conna with a 2 hole advantage after 15 holes played.
Congratulations to Tom and all the team on a great win.
Having beaten Milltown in the first round of the Metropolitan Cup comprehensively Tom Kelly had high hopes for his team as they faced Lucan in the second round of the competition today. Without home advantage and facing a very strong Lucan team unfortunately the team came up a little short today despite excellent preparation by Tom and the team.
The damage was done early in Lucan with Ben Crowley loosing 6&5 and both Eoin Corrigan & Craig Hazelton loosing 5&4. The team now had to win the remaining away match as well as all three home matches. At one stage this looked highly unlikely with the three home matches struggling to get a strong grip on any of the matches. Word filtered back that Dominic Brodeur was in a strong position and within a few holes on the back nine Evan Dalton, Luke McLaughlin and Conor McAleer each turned their matches around giving us a very exciting finish in the end. Evan, while struggling off the tee for much of the day was hitting glorious recovery iron shots and got his match to all square after 13. The 14th & 15th were shared but a loss on the 16th followed by an errant tee shot on 17 which required a reload off the tee resulted in a win for Lucan in the match and the tie. At this stage Conor McAleer was dormie 2 up and Luke was 1 up through 16 while Domonic Brodeur was 5 up through 12 in Lucan.
A tight finish in the end and a great fight back from the team but unfortunately we’ll have to wait till 2022 to try again in the Metropolitan Cup.
Hard luck to Tom and all his team.
